Third Crusade

Battle, betrayal and belief in a struggle for the Holy Land.

Prosecute or defeat the third crusade in this card-driven war game. Command armies to seize resources, send emissaries to build alliances, and perform pious feats to ensure standing with the faith. But every choice has a cost. Players must tread a fine line between strengthening their position and granting too much power to their opponents over the events that shaped the conflict.

Players compete, either alone or in a coalition, to perform valiant feats that claim glory for their loyalty. Each round, players use a hand of event cards to determine their initiative and diplomatic focus, as well as to set the consequences of their opponents’ decisions on how many and how powerful the orders they will carry out in the round will be. Orders are placed secretly onto the board and are used to move and reinforce armies - with the aim of capturing regions for resources and the completion of missions. Whilst there is glory to be had from controlling regions and fulfilling missions, defeating the enemy in battle is the main method by which a general can increase their standing. Battles are deterministic, but the play of reactive orders to a combat can tip the scales - so no result is ever certain. Although defeating the enemy is the key to victory, a force must balance this with ensuring it has access to the resources needed to supply its troops, construct powerful war machines and grant gifts to gain the support of its allies and the all-important blessings of the faith.
