Note: The SWEDISH version. The Witcher: Old World is a competitive adventure board game that thrusts players into a monster-infested realm teeming with arcane magic, dark secrets, and dangerous places to discover. Based on the fan-favourite The Witcher universe, set years before the saga of Geralt of Rivia, the game explores a time when monsters roamed the Continent in greater numbers — a constant peril which required the attention of expertly trained monster slayers, known as witchers. Five competing witcher schools trained their adepts through brutal regimes, and once fully prepared, these now-recognized witchers set off to explore the land, seeking trouble, adventures, and helping others for coin. The Witcher: Old World sees 2 to 5 players travelling across a vast map, embarking on masterfully penned quests, encountering and making ambiguous moral choices, fighting monsters — and sometimes even brawling with other witchers to defend their school’s honor! The game lets players construct their own unique decks of cards by choosing from a wide range of abilities: attacks, dodges, and witcher combat magic — known as Signs. Through card synergy, players aim to achieve powerful combos as they utilize their witcher school’s hallmark abilities to their full potential. Quests, battles, and even dice poker will allow each player to earn money, obtain new items, and train their skills. Become the mightiest witcher on the Continent. A great adventure awaits!

Ion Game Design

Battle, betrayal and belief in a struggle for the Holy Land. Prosecute or defeat the third crusade in this card-driven war game. Command armies to seize resources, send emissaries to build alliances, and perform pious feats to ensure standing with the faith. But every choice has a cost. Players must tread a fine line between strengthening their position and granting too much power to their opponents over the events that shaped the conflict. Players compete, either alone or in a coalition, to perform valiant feats that claim glory for their loyalty. Each round, players use a hand of event cards to determine their initiative and diplomatic focus, as well as to set the consequences of their opponents’ decisions on how many and how powerful the orders they will carry out in the round will be. Orders are placed secretly onto the board and are used to move and reinforce armies - with the aim of capturing regions for resources and the completion of missions. Whilst there is glory to be had from controlling regions and fulfilling missions, defeating the enemy in battle is the main method by which a general can increase their standing. Battles are deterministic, but the play of reactive orders to a combat can tip the scales - so no result is ever certain. Although defeating the enemy is the key to victory, a force must balance this with ensuring it has access to the resources needed to supply its troops, construct powerful war machines and grant gifts to gain the support of its allies and the all-important blessings of the faith.

Imagine a dozen or so random humans, robots, and none-of-the-above, each with their abilities, goals, and secret relationships, have been turned loose on a space station that will be incinerated upon its inevitable reentry into Earth's atmosphere. You are one of these characters, and the others are collaborators you have on hand, ready to assist you in achieving your goals. But choose them wisely, as any one of them could secretly be another player waiting to betray you!

Conspire with rivals. Enlighten the World. 1776: Enlightenment era thinking has taken hold across Europe, setting the stage for the modern era, yet in Bavaria the Holy Roman Empire (H.R.E.) reigns supreme, suppressing the dissemination of revolutionary thoughts and ideas. Those wishing to undermine the H.R.E.'s authority and enact Enlightenment reforms must do so from the shadows. University of Ingolstadt professor Adam Weishaupt, aspiring to mold Bavaria to the ideals of the Enlightenment, formed a secret society to make his vision a reality. His society was called the Order of the Illuminati. In Pax Illuminaten, players assume the role of an Areopagus, a top ranking disciple of Adam Weishaupt's Order of the Illuminati. You are tasked with accomplishing a series of recruitment plots to extend the reach of the order and grow its web of sympathizers. Players will compete with each other to gain influence over this growing membership in a bid to accomplish Weishaupt's designs ahead of their rivals and become the highest ranked among the Areopagites. In Pax Illuminaten players assume the role of an Areopagus, a top ranking discipline of Adam Weishaupt’s Order of Illuminati. You are tasked with accomplishing a series of variable recruitment plots to extend the reach of the order and grow its web of sympathizers. Players will compete with each other to gain influence over this growing membership in a bid to accomplish Weishaupt’s designs ahead of their rivals and become the highest ranked among the Areopagites. In gameplay terms, players will explore a network of potential recruits. Players will spread their influence over these recruits, in turn gaining their favor (i.e. resources) which is used to power additional actions. Multiple players can have influence over the same card at the same time, creating a complex decision space. The card's themselves, representing historical “luminaries” known or suspected to be Illuminati members, are multi-suited and multi-purposed. Luminary cards comprise the network of recruits, can be chained together to execute powerful abilities, and are used to bolster your strength in challenges. Victory is based on meeting the conditions of public and private "plot cards," which vary from game to game. These plot cards stipulate certain arrangements of cards and influence that need to be met, and the player able to meet two or more plot card's first will win. The different mixes of plot cards used in each game can lead to different incentives and strategies. 	Gameplay Highlights: Pax Illuminaten is a crunchy game and packs a lot of punch in a small box and small footprint. A few key highlights of the design: Players will explore a map of “luminaries” (18th century figures) and build co-occupied networks of connections as they try to accomplish variable game-winning plots. The mix of victory conditions changes every game, with a high degree of interaction as players strive to outmaneuver (something fighting, sometimes collaborating) with their opponents to achieve the victory conditions first. Multi-purpose and multi-suited cards create deep decisions and tough calls. Cards are used for building the map and accomplishing goals, resource generation, actions, and resolving battles between players. Core mechanics include: area control, territory/network building, and hand management. Mix in a dose of negotiation and double-think/bluffing. Overall, the game provides a unique, historical look at the theme combined with rich gameplay and relatively quick playtime, all in a compact package.

Pax Illuminaten

Welcome to the world of the Vikings! Pax Viking Junior is a version of Pax Viking for the whole family, including younger kids, age 6 and up. True, some Vikings lived as robbers, but most of them were doing well as great farmers, traders and explorers. And the Vikings were true animal lovers. Above all, they liked cats. Freya, one of the strongest gods in the Norse fairy tales who had her own Valhalla called Folkvang, had a chariot pulled by two cats. How to play: Viking ships had cats with them on the voyages, across seas and along rivers. In Pax Viking Junior, you are such a cat family! You win by collecting silver, gold and jewels and by making friends among other animals around Europe. The exact combination you need differs from game to game, so you can play many times with different experiences.

Pax Viking Junior

Pax Hispanica is an economical, asymmetric strategy game featuring nautical pirates. You will start as a callow teenager seeking fame and fortune in the Caribbean in 1598. Over the course of the game your adventures will take your career in many directions. You can become a great liberator, an influential priest, a strong ourtier, or a legendary pirate of the Caribbean. Being the 17th Century, the Spanish crown owns almost everything but the black market is everywhere as well and nothing is safe from the pillaging of buccaneers! The game features intricate and time efficient naval battles and a rich web of possible strategies. With this historical theme and the asymmetrical gameplay, your victory conditions and the future are set by the choices you make in battle and in treachery. And there are many strategic choices to be made in Pax Hispanica! Buy cards from the market, build, and develop your colonies, missions, and fleets. Fight at sea or land, outsmarting your opponent in open battle or perhaps in a duel! Advance on the Philosophy Board to shape the world in your image and claim victory!

Pax Hispanica

In Kartini - From Darkness to Light, you manage schools for girls where girls from different islands of Indonesia come to be students. As they graduate, the students become politicians, fighters, patrons or teachers, further advancing education for women and supporting the fight for the nation’s freedom. Strategically manage your duits (money) and books to help as many girls graduate from your school while paying attention to your school’s reputation. After four rounds, signifying four years of compulsory preliminary education in Indonesia, the player with the highest points wins the game. Kartini - From Darkness to Light celebrates the triumphs of girls’ education. The game takes place in Indonesia in the late 1800 to the early 1900, during the country’s struggle for independence from Dutch colonialism. This was the era where Indonesian young women were stepping up to the plate, leading battles and participating in politics for a free Indonesia. Realizing that the key to the nation’s eventual liberation lied in education, some of them built schools and advocated for more and more girls to be educated to then participate in the nation’s fight for freedom. Indonesian women’s yearning for education and to take an active role in the public life were encapsulated in a famous series of letters written by Kartini, a Javanese aristocrat, to her Dutch friends. These letters were later published as a book titled ‘From Darkness to Light’ from which the name of this game derived. Kartini’s letters are often credited as one of the cornerstones of Indonesian women emancipation movement and they served as profound inspirations for Indonesia’s fight for independence.

Ion Historical Playing Cards

"Boardgames inspired by our wonderful world!"

We believe in the potential of board games as social, educational and creative tools. 

We are a Swedish board game developer, publisher, & board game consultant agency. ION's vision is to design board games that both cover a broad range of subjects in history and natural science, and inspire a changed future. We want to be involved in creating real change, in an indirect and entertaining way.

In our boardgames we value a link to reality/science/history, not only as a backdrop but also as a basis for game mechanic design. In our games we strive to achieve unscripted narrative experiences generated by the content and the players’ minds and interaction.

In line with our vision to spread the wonderful world of board gaming experience to as many as possible, we also have a segment about collaborations, ION Venture. We will from time to time work with potential projects alongside our main labels through consultancy in (board) game design and development of games.

Representation is important in all aspects of life, including when you play games. We aim to include an even mix of women, men and other gender identities when creating characters in our games. This can be seen in many of our games, for example Stationfall, Expedition Zetta, Pax Viking, Dawn on Titan and more. 

Ion Game Design condemns all expressions of visible and invisible discrimination, harassment, and racism in its many forms. The solution is bigger than the efforts of any single organisation, yet we believe businesses have a responsibility to help lead. Our goal is to contribute to a more accepting world by creating board games that inspire change, both now and in the future. Inspiring towards a world with less intolerance. By presenting themes that show episodes of history usually not remembered or purposely left out, we are hoping to bring a clearer perspective of the diversity that has always existed in this world. 

We want to be involved in creating real change, and our tool for doing so is used in an indirect and entertaining way. We encourage our partners and customers to do the same.
